Building a Brighter Future for Flint's First Ward

Leon El-Alamin: Candidate for City Council

My vision is grounded in the principles of equity, collaboration, and empowerment, with a commitment to addressing the unique needs and aspirations of all residents.

At the heart of this vision is the revitalization of our neighborhoods, ensuring safe, blight free, and thriving environments where families can flourish. Access to affordable housing, employment opportunities, financial, and mental health services are necessary to reduce recidivism and keep our communities safe. I envision well-maintained parks and green spaces, vibrant community centers, and pedestrian-friendly streets that promote connectivity and social interaction. Through strategic investment in infrastructure improvements and and programs we can re-create a sense of pride and belonging among residents, fostering a strong community spirit that transcends economic and social divides.

Supporting Our Youth

I believe that investing in our youth is not only an investment in our future but also a catalyst for positive change in the present. Through mentorship programs, access to educational resources, job opportunities, and additional opportunities for civic engagement, I will strive to empower our young residents to realize their full potential, become leaders in their own right, and contribute meaningfully to the progress and prosperity of the First Ward.

Protecting Our Elders

Safeguarding our elders involves strategic financial support, particularly concerning home improvements and property tax relief. Firstly, I propose collaborating with local agencies to increase opportunities for seniors to access free home improvement resources such as roof replacement, siding repair, porch renovations, and window replacements to name a few. In addition to this, I propose we streamline access to property tax exemptions and relief programs tailored to seniors. This includes expanding outreach efforts to ensure eligible seniors are aware of available assistance and simplifying application processes to alleviate bureaucratic hurdles.

Uniting Our Communities

Handling outbursts and interpersonal conflicts within the Flint City Council requires a combination of diplomacy, communication, and a focus on the greater good of the community.  My approach to handling conflict on the Flint City Council centers on preventing it before it occurs. By protecting our youth, and the work I have done at M.A.D.E Institute, we can reduce recidivism, increase mental health services , and create opportunities for those in the community to thrive.

Promoting professionalism, civility, and a shared commitment to serving the interests of our constituents is work I have consistently proven I am capable of. By focusing on our common goals and values, I will be the bridge for overcoming interpersonal conflicts to ensure that we can work together effectively to address the challenges facing our community.

“With the support of residents in the First Ward of Flint, we can revitalize our community for the better. ”
