Blight Removal

In our comprehensive plan to address blight within the First Ward, my team and I will start by conducting a meticulous assessment of blighted properties utilizing GIS mapping and community input. This assessment will prioritize properties based on safety hazards, degree of deterioration, and their impact on property values and community aesthetics. With this prioritization in place, we will establish clear criteria for targeting blighted properties, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively to areas with the greatest need.

To enforce blight removal, we will strengthen code enforcement measures, increasing inspections and imposing penalties for violations to incentivize compliance. Moreover, we will explore innovative strategies such as property acquisition through tax foreclosure or eminent domain, allowing us to take control of blighted properties and either rehabilitate them for productive use or facilitate their demolition.

Securing funding for demolition projects will be a critical component of our plan. We will pursue grants from state and federal sources, as well as community development funds, to support the demolition and land clearance of properties beyond repair or those posing significant safety risks. Working in collaboration with local contractors and demolition firms, we will ensure that these projects are executed efficiently and in compliance with environmental regulations.

In parallel, we will implement strategies to stabilize and beautify vacant lots, preventing further blight and enhancing neighborhood aesthetics. This may include initiatives such as landscaping, community gardens, public art installations, or temporary use agreements for recreational activities. By engaging residents in these efforts and empowering them to take ownership of blight removal, we will foster a sense of pride and ownership in the community.

Throughout the implementation of our plan, my team and I will establish mechanisms for monitoring progress and evaluating impact. Key metrics such as the number of blighted properties remediated, changes in property values, crime rates, and resident satisfaction will be tracked to assess the effectiveness of interventions. Additionally, we will emphasize long-term sustainability by investing in preventative measures such as proactive code enforcement and community revitalization initiatives, addressing the root causes of blight and creating lasting positive change in the First Ward.
